Making Sense – Hearing

Continuing the study of the senses, today I will explore the sense of hearing.

When I was very young I had a condition which damaged my hearing. I was almost deaf and didn’t know it. I had learnt to read lips and no one knew. But I became extremely shy because I didn’t always understand what people were saying. I believed I was stupid. Others thought I was rude because I didn’t always respond to them. So I retreated into a shell where I couldn’t cause any anger or earn any ridicule.

Then my mum discovered the problem and the doctors operated. When I woke after surgery I cried and I cried because every sound seemed to boom in my ears. This was my new normal. I could hear again. Because I was so young I hadn’t realised how much I’d been missing.

I thank the Lord for this hearing. I could at last understand the things that went on around me. I was no longer lost in a muffled world.

If you have the gift of hearing, then I urge you to use it.

Listen to the wind in the trees.

Listen to the birds in the neighbourhood.

Listen to the ocean waves breaking on the shore or the traffic roaring by.

Listen to God’s voice. Hear His whispers. Respond to His call.

Those who have ears to hear, let him hear!

Both physical and spiritual, so true! Sometimes I see and hear God shouting truth at people, but its like they are completely closed off to it, and its frustrating. My prayer is that i will be completely open to hearing him, even when his voice comes as quiet whisper...

Even when I may not like what I hear and it requires change on my part...Open my ears to your voice Lord!

Well said, Rebekah. I'll join you in that prayer.

Thank you thank you for the reminder!
Sometimes I get so busy that I forget to sit and listen.
What Rebekah said, I agree along with you too, Lynda.
I was woken up by birds singing this morning, and frankly, I wasn't very happy about it because we got in very late last night after getting our daughter all moved off campus (packing, moving, cleaning-whew!), and so I put a pillow over my head so I could sleep some more.
I did sleep, and then as I was rising, I heard the same exact bird still singing.
(I was much happier about it this time ;), and realized that I was thankful that I could hear birds, and that I have birds in my yard.
So, your post was God speaking to me once again:
"Be still. Listen. I love you."
Blessings to your day, Lynda!

This is a very moving post. Thank you for sharing. As I write, I can hear the birds outside with a new appreciation. Hugs.

I stood outside this morning hanging laundry on the clothesline - and I listened. God's voice speaks to me through the wind blowing the leaves in the trees, the many birds chirping and singing, the spring frogs croaking, even the 'movement' of the grass.
I love listening.
This was a great reminder for us all to hear what/Who it is we're listening to.
Thank you.

Leslie, your comment made me smile. The birds chirp and squawk outside my bedroom window in spring way too early for a sane person to be awake. It used to really bother me, but like you said, God taught me to be thankful instead. And sometimes I would get up early and achieve all sorts of things when normally I'd sleep in.

Kathy, yep, and not just the birds. I have a new appreciation for the sound of traffic, for the sound of children playing in the street, even for the soft hum of my computer as I type away.

Deb, so much goes by unnoticed. It's such a blessing to be able to hear and appreciate all the things you mentioned.

Hi again, I love to wake to birds singing and currently we have been having tons of wind so I hear that too but mostly I love to listen to the Lord speak, through His word and through His Spirit. Thanks for your posts on senses this week-we need to appreciate all that the Lord has given. I too, echo Rebekah's pray above.
Hugs, Noreen

Noreen, yes, its wonderful to be able to listen to the Lord speak. It takes practise and it takes learning (through reading His word) but it is so precious.

We could all learn to listen more and talk less. That's why God gave us two ears and only one mouth!

Praise God that you have your hearing. Beautiful post.

Christine, I like your reason for our two ears and one mouth :)
